Early childhood services are essential for working families, but should no longer be focused on as a means of getting people back into employment.
Looking after our children is an essential service and the regulation and standards of care should be very high.
Early childhood education and care services will be improved with increased governance and raising of industry standards, including legislated minimum nutrition standards.
These standards should also be implemented in schools with greater investment in the health, wellbeing and life skills of children throughout their education and minimum nutrition standards in school canteens.
Childcare services and education will be looked after by the newly created Children's and Youth Portfolio, with both the Department of Health and the Department of Education contributing.
